Ginny Luke
Softly delivered but nevertheless potent enough to shape the entire mood of the music, the lead vocal Ginny Luke throws down in her new single/video combo “Love Hypocrisy” is absolutely reason enough to give the track a close listen before the month of September is over. Searing and as electric as her signature violin is, Luke’s voice is definitely the center of attention in this release, but I wouldn’t say it’s the lone element worthy of recognition in this latest release. Backed by a crossover beat that bravely touches on a club sound I’d love to hear more of in the future, this talented musician shows us she has the chops to do some amazing things in her awesome new studio cut.
The video for “Love Hypocrisy” is as decadent as the trademark harmony in this song is, and furthermore, I think it’s a strong point of reflection for the lyrical narrative as it’s unfurled by Ginny Luke. She dominates the shots she’s in as well as the more cinematic visuals we encounter all through the very presence of her voice, and for an artist more renowned for her violinist skills than she is anything else, that’s definitely nothing to scoff at
These lyrics are rather simple cosmetically, but from where I sit, I think Luke’s delivery was always meant to be the primary catalyst for catharsis in this track. She’s imparting so much emotionality just in the very tone of her vocal, and yet she’s leaving enough room for the background instrumentation to colorize her words and give us a feeling of realism amidst the otherwise anthemic crash of the drums. “Love Hypocrisy” isn’t conventional in any way, and for those of us who keep up with good indie music, that hits the spot better than anything else could this summer.
If this is on par with what Ginny Luke is going to be producing in this next chapter of her ongoing story, I think there’s a better chance than not she’ll find a mainstream audience eager to embrace her musical moxie in the near future. She definitely doesn’t sound afraid of expressing herself through whatever means she’s afforded in “Love Hypocrisy,” and though there’s quite a bit of competition among her underground brethren in the Los Angeles music scene, harmonies like those found in this new single should be enough kindling to spark her ascent to the next level.
