Blindboss

Melodically smooth and as tonally expressive as it is an agent of poetic communication, the vocal in Blindboss’ new single and music video “Fake Internet Points” is absolutely a major source of emotion for the track far beyond the scope of the lyrical narrative alone. In this early cut from Blindboss, we get an up close and personal look at the cerebral side of his songcraft while revisiting a punkishness that hasn’t been nearly as prominent in alternative music lately as it traditionally has. He’s using every weapon at his disposal here, and yet somehow avoiding the negative aspects of indulgence altogether.

The music video for “Fake Internet Points” is ultra-barebones, but this concept works perfectly for the abstract minimalism that was in mind when mixing the song’s best moments. There isn’t a big need for fireworks in the visual experience here, primarily because it would probably make the music feel even more overwhelming than it already does. Some videos are better when they aren’t loaded with props, and that’s definitely the case with a piece of material like this - while his peers might be content to wallow in camp and pomp, Blindboss has no time for such nonsense.

There is a ton of texture in the instrumental fabric of this song, but the vocal is always the main focus in the mix. The percussion churns beneath the keys, nearly suffocated by smothering intensity of the melodic elements here, but its rhythm remains tethered to our singer’s words. This ultimately makes it impossible to avoid the swaggering appeal of the drums, and specifically how they influence our interpretation of the narrative as it’s presented by Blindboss himself. He’s a methodical songwriter, and that’s quite obvious when reviewing this single and its video.

If you haven’t heard Blindboss’ music yet, this is a good song to start with. “Fake Internet Points” flirts with a lot of themes that lie on the far left side of the dial, but rather than sounding reticent in his experimentations, this artist dives in head-first and winds up sounding more than a little confident with the results he renders. This has been a great summer for fans of the indie rock beat in the American underground, and for this track and video combo to be standing out as much as it does, there’s no denying just how much talent its creator has to give up.
